2011 - The Golfer=s
quotation from the Bible
A good name is to be chosen rather than great
riches, and favour is better than silver or
gold.
( Prov. 22:1)
|
Pergis commentary:
Golf has, as
all other sports, an element of honesty. In
the social play as well as in the play of
competitions you are often your own judge.
Your own responsibility and progress is of
an extreme importance for a successful
play.
Plainness and communication gives
confidence for your own performance and for
that of your fellow-players. The one who
plays in accordance with the idea of the
game of golf and it’s rules leaves the
course with his honour intact and is gaining
the respect of others. |

2010 - The Golfer=s
quotation from the Bible
The flowers
appear on the earth;
the time of the singing of birds is come.
(Song of Solomon 2:12)
2009 - The Golfer=s
quotation from the Bible
Proverbs 14:29 (New International Version -

A patient man has
great understanding,
but a quick-tempered man displays folly.

Proverbs 18:15 (New International Version – UK)
“The heart of the discerning
acquires knowledge;
the ears of the wise
seek it out.”
Pergis’
commentary to this quote:
At the 11th tee at Jonkoping GC I am
standing beside The Experienced, who has
stricken his ball and it has hit the green. No
problem for a player with an handicap of 7.
- This does not seem so very nice, it is just a
green shot that counts.
- Hum, you have to make your shot! Here is the
course guide. Check what they say!
The course guide says: “Railway all along the
left side and a ten meter deep ravine on the
right side. A small bunker to the right between
the green and the ravine. A cautious players
goes for the left side of the green and is very
happy with a two-putt.”
I take may stance and I recapitulate the three
things I have decided to keep in order before
hitting. As a matter of fact I am only able to
concentrate on one. I have to be observant on
the slice, but if I hook, then I am gone. The
railway.
Now my backswing, slowly, and then I strike the
ball, a little bit to hard, perhaps. The ball
flies towards the green, but now there is the
slice, well in height, but the ball goes down
into the ravine.
I hit a provisional ball which
lands fifty meters in front of me in the middle
of the fairway.
- I am giving up my first ball, I
will never find it!
- You have to know one thing, if I happen to see
that ball, then you have to hit it. The
Experienced had spoken.
Having come up to the green I can
see my first ball down in the ravine. At the
foot of a spruce, there is my ball. Apparently
not possible to hit. But it has to be done.
I take my stance in a very curious position.
Now it is a question of one stroke and a stroke
with force. And then, tussocks, grass and stones
and sand are flashing …. I am looking up and I
can see my ball in a nice track right up in the
air towards the green. Unbelievable.
The Experienced is laughing when I come up to
the green. Now I can se my ball. It lies half a
meter from the hole.
A par putt and it was nice!

The cup
The
Church of England golf team met the Swedish Church golf
team the 28th September in a Ryder Cup style golf match
for the Egypt Cup, which was set up by the English
team in 2006. The English team held the cup after a
match at Chelmsford GC, England. Now the return match
was played at Forsgården GC at Kungsbacka, Sweden.
The Egypt Cup is a silver trophy which was originally
played for between the English clergy of North Africa
until the Suez crisis in 1956.
Unfortunately for David Price, the English team captain,
and the English team, David had an accident at
Landvetter airport in Gothenburg. David fell in the
stairs, lost his conscience and was brought by ambulance
to hospital. It was immediately obvious David could not
play the next day. The deputy captain Paul Taylor and
Colin Sowter had to reorganize their team.
It was decided that Mrs Joy, Moore, who accompanied her
husband to Gothenburg, should go in as a player in the
team.
It was also agreed between the leaders of the two teams
that, due to the circumstances for the English team, the
12th single match should be cancelled and regarded all
square giving half a point to each team.

2007 - The Golfer=s
quotation from the Bible
(English standard version)
|
“So now faith, hope and love abide, these
three; but the greatest of these is love."
(1 Cor. 13:13) |
Pergis’ commentary to this quote:
The tee of 18th hole. The fairway lies in front of
the player, who anxiously looks into his score card. The wind,
the rain and his tiredness have taken out their rights, once
again.
Now, slowly, he raises his eyes towards the clubhouse, behind
the green, that is far away. There, somebody is waiting. He
lowers his eyes, then slowly, he performs his swing, perfectly,
and is able to see his ball in a nice curve. The waiting.
- “Faith,
hope, and love”…he thinks…”it seems to work!”
2006 - The Golfer=s
quotation from the Bible
(New King James Version (NKJV)
For what profit is it to a man if he gains
the whole world, and loses his own soul?
(Matthew 16:26)
Pergis’ commentary to this
quote:
A strong word that can be valid also in the game of
golf. If, for example, you desire to win or get our
own way by expanding the system of rules in a situation,
this might lead to the loss of joy and delight for the
game for you and your competitors. It is always a good
attitude to give time for reflection and understanding.
2005 - The Golfer=s
quotation from the Bible
(New King James Version (NKJV)
But let justice run
down like water,
And righteousness like a mighty stream.
(Amos 5:24)
Pergis’ commentary to this quote:
Righteousness in life and on the fairways demands of those who
are well informed of the rules that they adapt their knowledge
in a way that does not lead to advantages for themselves at the
expense of their competitors against the rules of life and the
game of golf. Then justice will stream into life and into the
game of golf.
2004 -
The Golfer=s
quotation from the Bible
(21st Century King James Version7)
A soft
answer turneth away wrath,
but grievous words stir up anger.
(Prov. 15:1)
Pergis’ commentary to this quote:
Sometimes we argue with our fellow beings. When searching harmony
our choice of words, our tone of voice as well as our body
language mean a lot. Then it is always worth to act by common
sense, heart and truth. In a difficult situation a strong
reaction often leads nowhere - a calm answer will give you a
better chance to reach the inner balance and the success that you
are seeking.
A.V.Despard, The man behind the first
golf club in Sweden, the Gothenburg
Golf club (1891-1894)
The English vicar A.V.Despard was the man
who introduced organised golf in Sweden in the city of Gothenburg.
In March 1891 The Gothenburg Golf Club was founded. Baron Oscar
Dickson became the chairman of the Club, but the driving
force behind it all was the Revd A.V.Despard.
